Clouzet would probably have an answer on top of his head. And the Lord caused the guilt of us all to strike Him. (7) Though He was oppressed and afflicted, like a lamb led to slaughter He did not open His mouth, and like a ewe before her shearers He did not open His mouth. (8) By repressive judgment He was taken away, and who gave any thought to His posterity? There is nothing okay about it, regardless if you do it or plan not to do it.

He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it." So, if only "the first person of the Godhead" is "The true and living God," then what are the other two? This place is the mystery of Christ's Descent into Hell, which Balthasar explicitly calls the centre of all Christology. [32] Because the Descent is the final point reached by the Kenosis, and the Kenosis is the supreme expression of the inner-Trinitarian love, the Christ of Holy Saturday is the consummate icon of what God is like. [33] While not relegating the Crucifixion to a mere prelude — far from it! — Balthasar sees the One who was raised at Easter as not primarily the Crucified, but rather the One who for us went down into Hell.

Secondly, divine power is granted to the anointed. Given the scriptures they had before them, the Church Fathers hardly could have failed to do so. He claimed to actually, and in reality, be the Jehovah of the Old Testament without any qualifications! The Hebrew Bible uses the phrase "son of God" in other senses: to refer to heavenly or angelic beings; to refer to the Children of Israel, and to refer to kings. But rather than adopting the typical evangelical interpretation of Christ, as little more than our savior from this present evil world, Noll turns for his interpretation to the classic Christological statements to be found in the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the declarations of the church councils of Nicea (325) and Chalcedon (451).

Consequent to this humbling, God also "highly exalted him [Jesus], and [has] given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11). This faith perspective flows into an ethic of care that honors the integrity of creation at every scale.

In his new book, Wright explains that Jesus' death does more than just get us into heaven. Inquiries of this sort are particularly important for fundamental theology and in exchanges with nonbelievers. In this paper, I would like to discuss three topics that I found to be the most interesting. God's glory is the manifestation of how great He is. In Jewish prayer books and recited regularly in Synagogue services is Maimonides’ affirmation: ‘I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah, and, though he tarry, I wait daily for his coming.’ This essay seeks to explore one key question: How can Christians understand the persistence of Judaism and acknowledge the faithfulness to God of many Jews over the last two millennia, who nevertheless cannot accept Jesus as Messiah?

Jesus was not a created being but rather existed from eternity with the Father. The church tortured people suspected of holding non-orthodox beliefs until they confessed or died. But we are not necessarily arguing for direct dependence by Paul or John or any New Testament writer on Philo or any particular writer. All four Gospels do mention the event, though they give it small mention compared to the in-depth details they offer concerning the crucifixion. "However, I've come to realize that the reason Jesus prayed such a prayer had very little to do with the physical pain He was about to endure and everything to do with the emotional torture He was already going through. "You see, at that moment, Jesus was feeling the weight of the sins of all of humanity on His shoulders.3 His sacrifice was dying for our sins—sins that He never committed so that we wouldn't have to.

Mark's point seems to be that we cannot understand who Jesus is, and cannot, therefore, be his disciples, until we realize the centrality of suffering in his mission -- and in ours. If Mary was just an incubator for a created flesh, Jesus could have still been considered a genuine human being (Adam was a created man that did not have a human mother but yet he was still completely human), but He would not have been part of the Adamic race. Having been redeemed from sin's grasp and bought out from under its control, we who walk out of the prison house in faith are washed clean by the blood of Christ, and receive His righteousness in place of our own, so that we are now considered guiltless by the justice of God; we call this aspect of the blood of Christ in salvation justification.
