From Christchurch, a five-hour drive across the Canterbury Plains will take you into the Southern Alps, where Whare Kea Lodge & Chalet is the perfect entrée to the splendour of New Zealand’s alpine region: trout fishing on the doorstep, winter heli-skiing and summer hiking trails lace through the mountain peaks. Auckland offers ample opportunities for water-skiing and surfing. It consists of the Australian mainland, such big islands as New Zealand, Tasmania, New Guinea (only it's eastern half), and the many thousands of petty tropical islands of the Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia regions, scattered throughout the South Pacific.

Some 540 local bodies, including city, borough, and county town councils; regional authorities; and boards that deal with electric power, harbors, pest control, and other special functions, are being replaced with a smaller number of united councils and regional authorities. Marine ecosystem health is also critical to the survival of many Pacific island populations. Natural ocean resources include fish, shellfish, pearls, mother-of-pearl and other shell materials, whales and coral reef. Especially lucrative are resources that can be mined from the ocean floor, such as manganese nodules and offshore oil and gas deposits. Shipping lanes, flyover rights and cyberspace frequencies are human-made resources of great value to Pacific island states. By charging licensing fees and leases to private corporations and governments that want access to these resources within an islands exclusive economic zone (EEZ), countries within Oceania profit from their location. Fisheries and other resources not within a specific countrys control are considered common property resources and are regulated somewhat by international treaties such as the 1982 Law of the Sea. Sydney, Australia, is Oceanias largest and most significant city. Along with Melbourne and Canberra, the capital of Australia, Sydney forms the core economic region of Oceania. More than 60% of Australias population lives in or near these three cities. Tourism, financial services and high-tech industries augment Australias established mining, manufacturing, agricultural (including wine-making) and ranching economies. The 2000 Summer Olympic Games were held in Sydney and made internationally famous many local landmarks, such as the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. The Australian Outback refers to the vast desert landscapes that characterize most of Australia west of the Great Dividing Range. Isolated ranching communities in the Great Artesian basin and elsewhere in the Outback are called cattle stations. Although the cattle are generally left to fend for themselves, they still require periodic human monitoring and culling. Mining towns, such as opal-rich Coober Pedy, are crucial to the Australian economy but are often harsh places to live. Commerce and education are conducted electronically for the most part; before the advent of the Internet, catalog shopping and lesson by radio were the norm. Medical care is provided by a unique corps of doctors, nurses and pilots who form the Flying Doctor service. The Flying Doctors (and nurses) periodically visit cattle stations, mining towns and other settlements to maintain community medical supplies, provide immunization shots and perform routine wellness checks. They also provide emergency medical care as needed but it can take hours between when a call is received and when help arrives. The Stuart Highway links Darwin on the northern coast of Australia to Adelaide in the south and is famous for its road trains, extremely large trucks that pull several cargo trailers each at very high speeds across the Outback. Aside from flies, snakes and other denizens of the Outback, dingoes are dangerous predators that prey on cattle and household pets. To prevent dingoes from attacking livestock in southern Australia, a 3300 mile long Dingo Fence was built and is still maintained. Over twice the length of the Great Wall of China, the Dingo fence is actually a collection of adjoining fences (Queensland Barrier Fence, New South Wales Border Fence, South Australia Dog Fence), some sections of which were first built more than 100 years ago. Many islands in the South Pacific have been permanently altered by mining, tourism and nuclear weapons tests. Nauru is an extreme case of environmental degradation due to resource extraction. Over thousands of years, birds and bats have used Nauru as a waystation in their travels across the Pacific Ocean -- their hardened excrement (guano) is rich in phosphates that enrich soils and make high-yield agriculture possible in places like Australia. During the past century, more than 90% of Nauru has been turned into a wasteland by the highly profitable mining operations. All residents of the island live on the coasts where all food and water must be imported from Australia. While per capita income used to be among the highest in the world, Nauru now seeks foreign aid to help rehabilitate the island ecosystem and to provide sustenance for its people, many of whom are guest workers from other islands. Like Australia, some islands generate most of their revenue from mining. Although the price of nickel has fallen dramatically in recent years, New Caledonia still relies heavily on high grade nickel ore. Papua New Guinea supplies copper and gold but has had some of its mines on the island of Bougainville threatened by worker unrest and rebel movements.
